In 1958, a decade before his death, Martin Luther King Jr. survived an assassination attempt after being stabbed with a seven-inch letter opener during a book signing in Harlem. The blade narrowly missed his heart, requiring hours of emergency surgery to save his life. Following the attack, King reaffirmed his commitment to nonviolence and stated he held no malice toward his attacker. 

Did you know that President Ronald Reagan signed a bill in November of 1983 that named the third Monday in January a national holiday for M.L.K. Jr.?
